Dear Diary
DEAR DIARY,
It has been a wild ride these past few days. A lot has happened today. You will probably spell my doom one day, with all the confessions that I have made to you. But there was just too much weight on my chest that I needed to get off. And I needed to share it with somebody that wouldnât pass judgment, criticism, or condolences; somebody that could just be there as I shared. But unlike many other days, I will be unable to start by reporting the exact time when I am sitting down for this little conversation with you. I really should not have hurled that little grandfather alarm clock at the wall. It was probably the only clock that I ever cherished. I seem to regret it even more now; now, that I am going to see Niharika after all these years. I should have done better with her!
Shubho honked his car horn louder than usual this morning when he came to pick up Aditi. There was an air of exuberance about that honk, not unlike the exuberance that Aditi had on her face as she kissed me goodbye, like she used to do during the first year of our marriage. They are headed out for the five-day long cruise celebration in Singapore having landed their newest client, as I write this. Aditi left a photocopy of the cruise reservations at the dining table in her haste. I found out that she and Shubho will be sharing the premium suite in the cruise for the first three days. The rest of the management were assigned lower class accommodation. At first, I presumed, but then I verified that the cruise they were boarding had just one premium suite. On day four and five, the suite was to accommodate an additional member. It was one Mrs. Sindhu Jeevan Rayapati.
Aditi was right when she said that my male ego couldnât have handled seeing her with Shubho all those years ago, instead of Monika, at Sindhuâs café. But I figured today that I could have lived with that for the rest of my life without significant regrets, compared to todayâs reality where Shubho has literally replaced me in the lives of the two women that I have weaved my whole existence around â albeit, my existence in their lives has been based as much on lies, as theirs seem to be in mine. In fact, Shubho has done me one better by simultaneously living out the two lives that I had carefully, but seemingly needlessly, kept isolated.
I was restless and I couldnât plan ahead. It was only as a distraction that I opened that letter from Niharika, but I am so glad I did. Niharika is living in Mumbai now. She wrote that she is living with her sister, Monika, there. Monika works with an NGO there that helps educate poor farmers about the various government and private credit schemes available for their aid.
Niharika wrote that the stab wound on
